The importance of BYOD security

Security is a priority for any company network, but for companies with bring your own device (BYOD) policies, the network may become vulnerable to increased risk. It can be convenient for employees to use their own personal devices like smartphones and tablets to access the company network, but in order to do so safely, policies should be put in place to help mitigate the risks inherent with this usage.

There are several risks that may become an issue with BYOD. A lost device that falls into the wrong hands could leave your network open to an unwanted intrusion. When employees do not update the security programs on their devices, it may create vulnerabilities that could be open to malicious activity. With employees using Wi-Fi to connect their devices to the company network, the need for adequate security is great.

Companies can take steps to mitigate these risks by putting a comprehensive BYOD policy in place. Despite the benefits a policy can bring, according to a ComputerWorld article, surveys have revealed that less than one in five companies with these types of policies in place have been taking steps to enforce them.

One of the issues cited with enforcement was that employees were hesitant to let IT install security programs on their personal devices and that the company might be able to access their personal data or make it possible for their managers to track them. As the article highlights, improved communication between the IT department and employees may be able to clear up some of these issues.

BYOD can provide increased convenience for employees, while also improving productivity. An IT support services company can advise your business on how to safely implement a BYOD program and security policy.
