How small businesses handle their IT solutions

Many small businesses are aware of the fact that technology is crucial to success in the current landscape. However, knowing is only part of the equation and execution is extremely important and increasingly difficult.

A recent article from Business Lexington, a Kentucky news source, spoke with several local company owners on the topic of keeping up with the latest technology solutions. The three professionals interviewed in the piece are Julie Lowe, the founder and social media strategist at Socially Aligned, Becky Marefat, the co-owner of The Dent Surgeon and Dave Sevigny, the president of DMD Data Systems.

All three of them shared that they have a hands-on role when it comes to their IT systems and do much of the work themselves. For matters that require more specific tech knowledge, they reach out to a specific employee with tech experience. However, they upgrade systems only every four to six years, which can be an eternity in the tech world.

However, Sevigny warned that businesses need to be careful about investing in new systems, and not implement something just to say that they have it.

"It is easy to lull yourself into thinking that if only you had this new device or that new software package things would be so much easier, but actually, you still have to do the work to make it efficient," Sevigny said. "We take the same practical approach with technology for ourselves and our clients: If it won't bring a good return on investment, we won't recommend it."

With an IT consulting firm that specializes in small business support, any company gains a valuable resource.
