Hardware issues – should you be scared?

Are you afraid of decreased productivity due to hardware issues? Here are some of the scarier problems you may find progressively creeping up in your equipment, and how to resolve them.

A computer is running on super slow speed

  • This is likely the most common PC offense. The process of elimination is the best start to resolving most issues, and this one is no different. Always try to reboot before investing your time in trying to determine culprits. And remember ABR Systems Group offers consulting and technical support for your hardware issues.
  • Check your drives for how much space is depleted. If there isn’t a lot of free space on your drives, your system will perform slowly.
  • Don’t forget to empty files from your recycling bin, delete temp files and uninstall unused software programs.
  • Consider your applications used. Microsoft system configuration is a tool for trimming down the number of applications that start up when your computer does (which can slow it down a great deal). See the manufacturer column of the Startup menu to see which apps you can deselect that aren’t necessary for the PC to start up.
  • It’s important to install good anti-virus and anti-malware software. Viruses can sometimes live in your computer undetected and at the very least, simply use up memory and slow your system. And on that note…
  • Anti-virus and anti-malware software has been known to slow PC performance. While regular scans are necessary, too-frequent checks can slow down PCs. Check your scan schedule and decrease the frequency if it’s more than every week.
  • Dust and Dirt can affect system performance as well, so make sure your computer is stored in a relatively dust-free environment, and try to keep it and its surrounding area wiped down.

 Your computer won’t turn on
If your computer won’t start, check for loose cords. Or, if your power supply is in question, replace the power cord or AC adapter, whichever is appropriate to your model. It may be better to contact a professional when you have a failing laptop – or – if you find that the PC does not recognize your hard drive.

Your computer shuts down without prompting
Often overheating can cause this problem. Poor ventilation or drying fans can create issues as your PC heats up. Most PCs are created to shut down when there is a risk of damaging hardware, which could happen when things heat up too much.

Now that you’ve (possibly) found the problem, consider fixes such as adding more memory, or having your fan repaired. There’s also a possibility that due to wear and tear, you just need a new machine. Let ABR Systems Group help you save time, effort and possibly money by getting to the bottom of your issues.
